ATLA Lipreading Class Information Pages

This site contains information on lipreading classes taught by members of the Association of Teachers of Lipreading to Adults (ATLA) - a registered UK charity.

All ATLA-listed classes taught by ATLA-registered lipreading teachers are taught by professional teachers who have completed a recognised lipreading teacher training course, subscribe to a code of conduct, and have agreed to maintain their professional development through networking and training days. Always ask if the teacher is a member of ATLA.

Finding a class:

Through ATLA

ATLA maintains a list of lipreading classes in the UK - see the SideBar on right.

Although we try to keep our class information as up-to-date as possible, we are dependent on our members informing us of changes to classes. We strongly recommend checking that a class is running before attending the venue.

To find your nearest class, please contact the Class Information Officer at classes@lipreading.org.uk and stating your nearest main towns and county you live in (if you live on the border of one or more counties please explain this so that we can provide details of classes in adjacent counties).

Through Your Local Adult Education Centre or College

Lipreading classes are usually offered at local adult education centres and/or colleges. A few classes are offered through Social Services/Audiology Services, and some through the WEA.

If your local adult education centre or college does not offer lipreading classes, then ask that they do so, however, do be aware that a teacher might not be available.

ATLA will try to recruit trainee lipreading teachers in areas where we are aware that there is a need.

Evening Classes

Unfortunately, evening classes are often in short supply. This is due to a combination of a shortage of lipreading teachers, and low numbers of people requesting evening classes. Education providers cannot run classes with low numbers of learners.

If you need an evening class in your area, but one is not available, do contact your nearest adult education centre or college and request one - but do be aware that there might not be a teacher available to teach it.

Private One-to-One Lipreading Classes

Some lipreading teachers do offer private lipreading classes on a one-to-one basis. One-to-one teaching is very intensive. Lipreading teachers offering such classes have additional expenses and considerations to take into account, such as third party and liability insurance, personal safety, etc. ATLA maintains a list of members who undertake one-to-one work.

Most private lipreading classes will be between 1 and 1.5 hours long, and cost from £20.00 - £30.00 per hour.

Classes can be tailored to meet your individual needs including specific family and work vocabulary, and information on assistive equipment to help you overcome barriers to access and communication.

Can't find a suitable class?

If you can't find a suitable class on these pages, then do Contact Us. It maybe that we are aware of a lipreading teacher in that area who is not a member of ATLA, or who has supplied us with class information.

I'm a Lipreading Teacher - where are my classes?

If your classes are not listed on these pages then it is most probably because you did not return your class information form to the Class Information Officer in September.

To add your classes to these pages or edit your listed classes:

  • If you are an ATLA member, you can do this direct in the same way that you use the ATLA Lipreading Teachers Wiki OR
  • If you are an ATLA member, you can email the Class Information Officer at classes@lipreading.org.uk with details of your classes
